Embedded Platform for real implementation of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy
Poster Exhibition
Diagnostics & battery management

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) is a method used for estimating battery states (SoX) through the estimation of the battery impedance allowing rapid and accurate monitoring of Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Safe operation of LIBs on electric vehicles (EVs) enhances range extension and fast-charging capability.
The practical application of EIS on EVs can further complement the current Battery Management System (BMS) data driven algorithms, enabling better use of the existing LIB allowing for accurate State of Health (SoH) and Temperature Estimation. Moreover, EIS enables Thermal runaway (TR) prediction enhancing safety skills of current BMS.
This work will introduce a Demonstrator Platform showcasing all the needing to perform EIS in real operating conditions: an excitation circuit capable of properly stimulating the battery with signals of predefined parameters such as frequency and amplitude, and an acquisition system capable of synchronously acquiring the voltage and current of each battery cell.

ST products (MCU, BMS ICs) have been selected to build this platform. The associated software package controls the acquisition and excitation systems, perform post-processing activity is used to properly evaluate battery impedance of 5 cells battery module. EIS data are collected on a GUI designed to allow user’s experiments.
This work will present the description of the setup, hardware, algorithms, software, and the results obtained in measuring battery impedance.
