Lithium-ion battery characteristics are highly non-linear in nature which presents numerous challenges in their design and development for commercial applications. Accurate battery cell models that will emulate their performance characteristics shall immensely contribute to development of rapid virtual prototyping methods, which helps to understand the battery performances (module/pack levels) under different working conditions and thereby provide a strong scientific tool for battery system development processes. Therefore, in this paper, firstly the development and validation of an accurate battery cell level model (thermo-electric) by means of equivalent circuit modelling technique shall be presented. In addition, the development of module level model from the cell model, that represents its electrical and inhomogeneous thermal characteristics will be explained. A major contribution of this work shall be the method to develop battery module thermal modelling tool, that shall represent temperature distribution within the battery module with limited temperature measurements, without the need of FEM simulations.
