Battery Education Network Bavaria (B³) – Qualification Measures for Battery Cell Production

The B3 Battery Education Network Bavaria (B³) project aims to address the rapidly growing demand for specialized qualifications in battery cell production, a critical area in the ongoing electrification of the automotive industry. Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), this initiative brings together a multidisciplinary consortium of leading research institutions, educational providers, and industry partners across Bavaria. The project’s primary goal is to develop innovative, tailored training solutions that prepare employees in kleine und mittlere Unternehmen (KMU) for the complexities of battery manufacturing while ensuring long-term job security in Bavaria. B³ approaches training holistically, encompassing the entire battery ecosystem—from raw materials and component processing to cell assembly and recycling.

A key partner in this initiative is the University of Applied Sciences Landshut (HAWL), whose role is central to the design and implementation of practical, hands-on training. HAWL’s advanced Energy Technology Center (TZE) in Ruhstorf offers state-of-the-art facilities where trainees can engage in direct applications of theoretical knowledge. These facilities cover the full production cycle, allowing trainees to simulate real-life scenarios from materials processing and cell component testing to the final assembly of modules and systems. The hands-on experiences provided by HAWL’s infrastructure ensure that the training is both technically robust and closely aligned with industry needs, preparing participants for immediate application in battery production settings.

The B³ project structures its training modules into three distinct pillars to serve varied educational needs: Modul-Batt (modular, short-term training sessions), APO-Batt (process-oriented, hands-on qualification measures), and Coach-Batt (programs for workplace educators). Each training pillar is carefully developed by interdisciplinary teams, ensuring that course content reflects current technological and pedagogical advances. This structure allows the B³ project to meet a diverse set of training needs, from entry-level technical skills to advanced process management and troubleshooting. HAWL’s involvement extends across all pillars, particularly focusing on battery module assembly and system integration, as well as supporting training in materials and cell technologies.

In addition to the in-person training, B³ incorporates virtual learning resources, delivered through a learning management system, which makes it possible to create personalized “learning journeys” that combine online theoretical modules with practical sessions at partner research facilities. This blended learning approach ensures flexibility and accessibility, allowing participants to build a robust skill set in a format that adapts to their schedules and career goals.

By establishing sustainable training programs and fostering industry-academia collaborations, the B³ Battery Education Network is creating a skilled workforce capable of supporting Bavaria’s role as a leader in electromobility and battery technology. This initiative not only enhances the competitiveness of Bavarian KMU but also secures regional employment, setting a foundation for sustainable growth in the evolving battery production industry. The B³ project aims to anchor core competencies in the region and contribute to the energy transition by strengthening Bavaria’s battery ecosystem for the future.
