Given the ongoing discussion about the slowdown in the electric vehicle market, more and more cell production plants in the Western world are being put on hold or get even completely cancelled. Ramping-up cell production with limited experience and an immature products proves highly challenging. Additionally, external factors such as strict regulatory requirements, political changes, inflation and weakening economic growth create significant hurdles, especially for newcomers, making it a costly business venture for many cell manufacturers to set up cell factories in Europe. These factors, combined with limited end-customer confidence in EV adoption and rising cost pressure, particularly from Asian cell manufacturers, are reflected in OEM sales figures in key markets that are lower than anticipated. This shift has heightened the focus on additional KPIs beyond cell performance, such as OEE, product and production quality, and scrap rates. Another factor that may not be underestimated, is the high complexity of the production process and the technical lead of manufacturers in Asia which might be able to support Western newcomers in their ramp-ups. Chinese cell manufacturers in particular dominate the industry and make it difficult for new players to persist on the market due to their existing capacities, strong established supply chains and technical know-how.
This presentation examines the challenges faced by emerging and established Western manufacturers during their cell ramp-up and production phases and elaborates on why Asian manufacturers have such a competitive and technological advantage. Factors such as the relevance of transitioning from state-of-the-art to innovative production technologies in this highly competitive industry and how these can positively influence production processes and efficiency will be discussed in this presentation. It will also analyze and discuss key factors in ramping-up production such as operational excellence, including OEE and scrap rates, as well as potential market consolidation or new collaboration opportunities. Finally, potential success factors for Western players are summarized, which are key for the improvement of battery cell production output, shortened time-to-market or reduced scrap rates in order to enable a stable market position and to increase competitiveness with Asian manufacturers.
