Cathode Materials Pilot-Plant “Powder-Up!” – Design on Demand on a Large Scale

Global demand for batteries is growing dynamically, driven by the need to electrify vehicles and store renewable energy to reduce CO2 emissions. High-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) require new, high-performance, cost-effective and sustainable materials. Cathode materials are crucial as they bring lithium into the battery cell and determine key parameters such as energy density and safety. However, new materials are often not developed fast enough to meet market demand. There is also a gap between the laboratory and pilot plant, which hinders the transition to industrial application: New products from research institutes are usually only available on a gram scale, which is insufficient for technical research. In order to close this material gap, the ZSW in Ulm has put the “Powder-Up!” synthesis pilot plant into operation. This modern facility enables the scaling and synthesis of cathode materials in the range from 1 kg to 100 kg. Customized materials are provided for research and industrial partners. “Powder-Up!” also supports rapid scaling and development through high-throughput synthesis facilities. Besides new materials for lithium ion systems, concepts for sodium ion systems are also being developed and direct recycling activities are in focus. All equipment is electronically monitored. The presentation will provide an overview of the concept and the challenges of developing new cathode materials. “Powder-Up!” is supported by the BMBF and the Ministry of Economic Affairs of the State of Baden-Württemberg.
