Solvent-free direct recycling of NMC cathode material from end-of-life Li-ion batteries

Since the use of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) as powering units in all different sorts of electric and electronic applications is increasing steadily, seeking efficient solutions for end-of-life (EoL) LIBs waste management is becoming an urgent need. Consequently, recycling EoL LIBs is critical to mitigate the environmental impacts and can be a great opportunity to recover and reuse the high value critical materials as secondary source. In this respect, we propose a solvent-free directly recycling method for the nickel-manganese-cobalt-oxide (NMC) cathode active material (CAM) healing. Our approach does not involve the use of any solvent either for the separation of the electrode materials that are tightly adhered to the Aluminium current collector or for the regeneration of the NMC material. Importantly, this process preserves the NMC structure, with no changes in its morphology. The regeneration of the NMC CAM powder is done via a molten salt process using Li2CO3 as lithium source, followed by a sintering step. The rejuvenated NMC CAMs show promising electrochemical performance, with convincing cycling stability and rate capability.
