Diverse or unified? Cell format & capacity progression with design analysis of newly released cells in Asia
Lecture
New materials and designs

In this presentation, we try to address two key questions from cell design perspective: whether cell formats are becoming more diversified or unified, and whether they are becoming larger or smaller. These questions are essential for navigating the challenges our industry is facing today and for understanding the future trends of battery design.

To explore this, we summarized the progression in past three decades, connected it with key applications and introduced design analysis of some latest innovations, for example, the blade, tabless cylindrical and new prismatic cells. Our study highlights the unique advantages and disadvantages of each type, as well as the different paths that cell manufacturers and OEMs have pursued to align with diverse objectives. We also investigate the cell capacity development, its relationship to the system and come to some conclusions of the optimized limits.

Incorporating insights from the Asian market, our analysis captures the technical and market dynamics that shape cell format choices. This work combines technical evaluation with market trends to support informed decision-making and foster dialogue among executives, technical leaders, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders in the battery value chain.

This study aims to connect current cell design progress with future opportunities. By understanding these evolving trends, we can better anticipate future requirements and make strategic decisions that align with technological advancements and market demands.
